Define ‘Natural Born’

Friday, February 29th, 2008

It turns out McCain is, by accident of birth, stirring a constitutional tizzy.  No, I’m not talking about policy, just his birth and parentage.  He was born in the Canal Zone to a Naval Officer.  Now, people are wondering if that disqualifies him for presidency, since the constitution requires the president be Natural Born.  Turns out, I’ve thought this one through already.  My Wisdom, let me show you it.

I was born in Japan to two American citizens from Indiana.  My dad was stationed outside Tokyo by the Air Force.  We grant citizenship in this country based on three criteria; naturalization, birth within our borders, and birth to a Citizen.  I was born to an American mother.   Since I was a citizen by dint of birth, I’m a ‘Natural Born‘ citizen as opposed to a naturalized citizen.

Now, just to game the system, say I had an American father and a foreign mother and was born on foreign soil.  Then it might be possible to challenge  paternity in a bid to discredit my eligibility, since the FATHER is the sponsoring citizen.  Though, this is something the State Department should probably be vetting anyway.

I believe that on my 35th birthday, I’ll be eligible to assume the office of the presidency.  I’m not saying I’m in the line of succession, but I’d meet the requirements.

Indy and the Idol

I like Indiana Jones.  I’m going to see the new movie.  I’m going to play the Lego game this summer.  And…  I just finished building all the Indiana Jones Lego sets!

An Overview of Indy’s World

Okay, Denmark.  Go make more sets for me to buy.

Our Long National Nightmare is Over!

Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

Ok, so maybe it’s not really a NATIONAL nightmare, but it was a pretty big deal to me!  IU once again has a coach I can get behind!!!!  Even if he is only an interim at this point, I am SOOOOO excited that Sampson is out and Dan Dakich has been named coach.  I was able to dig out my old IU pin, and I am wearing it proudly all weekend.  It feels so good to be able to root for my team again!  How refreshing!  :)   Sorry Northwestern.  You know I love you, but this time I’m finally going to cheer my heart out for my Hoosiers!

For Your Consideration

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

Last night we went to see Juno. It was wonderful! I was expecting a comedy, but it turned out to be one of the most touching movies I have EVER seen. Even though I have not seen any of the other Oscar nominated movies this year (and really have no desire to), I am rooting for Juno in every category – even the ones in which it wasn’t nominated! Because I really think there should have been some supporting actor nominations in there! I can’t imagine a more perfect movie. Besides, Hot Fuzz, my other favorite movie of the year, wasn’t nominated. So Go Juno!!!!!

March Madness Menagerie

Monday, February 18th, 2008

It’s that time of year again – time to get out the Easter decorations, and with them, the March Madness Menagerie. For the last several years, my family has been amassing a collection of stuffed ducks and bunnies. Since Easter usually conveniently falls around March Madness, we have named these critters after March Madness personalities. For example, there is a bunny named Bunny Battier; ducks named Tubby, Krzyzewski, Mateen, Scoonie, and even Gonzaga; and countless others. All of these stuffed animals live at my parents’ house. This year though, the March Madness Menagerie has made it to our house. Just like the way Pat Knight is carrying on his father’s legacy at Texas Tech, the proud tradition of Easter stuffed animals will be continued with the founding member of our next generation March Madness Menagerie: A Cadbury Bunny stuffed animal that clucks like a chicken. I have chosen to name this wonderful bunny Pat. Pat the Bunny. (Get it? Hee hee.) I’m so happy that the tradition will live on.

Go…Purdue?

Monday, February 18th, 2008

I am looking forward to the big IU/Purdue game coming up on Tuesday.  I think it will actually be on regular TV too!  Bonus.  However, while I normally look forward to IU beating Purdue, this year I must root for the Boilermakers.  Their coach seems to be a hardworking, honest, all around good guy.  IU’s coach is, like the one before him, an embarrassment.  So this week, instead of rooting for a Hoosier win over the Boilermakers, I will be rooting for the investigation to find that Sampson needs to be kicked out.  Why can’t IU hire a hardworking, honest, all around good guy like they did at Purdue?  Might I suggest Ron Hunter, Dan Dakich (who has been conspicuously present on the sidelines again – interesting timing), or Steve Alford?  (I won’t suggest any Knights because I would hope that they wouldn’t give IU the time of day after what they did to Bobby.)  Even more than a winning season, IU needs a coach who will bring the spirit back to IU basketball.  I look forward to the day when I can cheer wholeheartedly for my Hoosiers rather than showing support for my school by cheering AGAINST their basketball team.  All it would take is for them to hire a coach I can respect.  Until that time though, as my student teacher Melissa has taught me to cheer, “Boiler Up!”

A funny thing happened on the way …

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

The last two times Sally and I tried to go downtown for a special dinner, we’ve been sidetracked by weather.  For Christmas, we tried to go to the Old Spaghetti Factory but the roads around Westfield were icy.  Black Icy.  Tonight, since she’ll be gone for the 14th, we were going to the Weber Grill for a nice dinner.  On the way home, the roads seemed clear, if a bit snowy.  Then, as we were watching the news, the skies opened and dumped on the roads like so many packing peanuts.  Only wetter.

Point of interest, it’s possible to spin out using a roundabout at 15 mph.  I should know.  I was there.  I wouldn’t say I was “driving” at the time, but I was in the driver’s seat.

Needless to say, we’ve elected to stay in tonight, but only after finding out the above factoid on our way to the restaurant.

Giving things up for Lent…

Wednesday, February 6th, 2008

Since today is Ash Wednesday, I have an idea of what some people could give up for Lent: Christmas Lights.  I really think it’s time to take them down!!!!!!

Goodbye Bobby

Wednesday, February 6th, 2008

I am very sad that Bobby has decided to retire, but I am glad that he was able to make sure that his son got to be the coach at Texas Tech.  Tonight is Pat Knight’s first game, and I will definitely be rooting for him.  Hopefully, after tonight he will only have 901 more games to go to tie his father’s record.

Super Bowl Commercials

Monday, February 4th, 2008

‘Twas the night of the Super Bowl when all through the house, not a creature was stirring because they were sitting on the couch. The TV was hung on the TV stand with care in hopes that commercials soon would be there. When what to my wondering eyes should appear but a couple of sportscasters and lots of not so tiny football players. More rapid than eagles I hit the fast forward button because football is boring. On first downs and and field goals, on touchdowns and….(insert football word here – I just used up all of the ones that I know). Let’s get to the good stuff! Happy Commercials to All, and to All a Good Night!

P.S. How long until March Madness anyway?
